I'm sad this morning for the family of the young person who died, the families and others who were wounded and the entire community who was traumatized by yesterday's #StemShooting.

My fellow Americans who reside on the "left" side of the spectrum believe that designating schools as "gun free zones" and enacting ever more restrictive legislation on firearms will make our public spaces safer. Kudos to them for their good intentions. #copolitics #StemShooting

I favor an evidence-based approach, and the evidence CLEARLY shows that this strategy does not work. No gun laws on the books prevented yesterday's killers from getting guns. No artificial designation prevented them from carrying them into the school. #copolitics #StemShooting

The 2013 gun control laws did not prevent this shooting. This year's so-called "Red Flag" law did not prevent this shooting. This is because evil individuals intent on doing harm do not respect laws and will always find a way. #copolitics #StemShooting

What's to be done? Clearly another gun control law won't work. Gun confiscation en masse will not work. Gun registries do not work. What does? The answer is: Harden the targets and have armed defenders on site at all times. #copolitics #StemShooting

School security experts talk about monitored entrances. About metal detectors, and other measures to enhance security. Yes. Let's do them all. With the amount of money governments at all levels take by force, this should be achievable. #copolitics #StemShooting

But what I think is the most effective measure for deterring violence and saving lives is this: every school should have armed defenders on site at all times. Period. This may mean SROs, which the STEM school apparently did not have. #copolitics #StemShooting

This may mean private armed security. News reports and Sheriff Spurlock said the STEM school had private security, but no word on whether or not they were armed. Where were they? The clearly failed at preventing yesterday's tragedy. #copolitics #StemShooting

And it also should mean armed school staff. People who are already willing to put themselves between a bullet and your kid. People who already concealed carry in their lives outside of school. People who have been through advanced training. #copolitics #StemShooting

I saw news reports that unarmed students may have rushed and disarmed 1 of the shooters. This is reminiscent of the unarmed man who rushed the shooter at the Poway synagogue. People with the sheepdog mentality do that. Let's give them a fighting chance. #copolitics #StemShooting

The bottom line is this: Schools need to be safe places, and there are multiple approaches including armed defenders to make them so. Let's do this. Today. No more excuses. #copolitics #StemShooting
