Alright, it’s Mother’s Day. So, let’s do this. Thread below.
/ I believe women who raise children are heroes, who often bear a disproportionate burden of responsibility of doing so. Our society needs to change that. Prolife has to mean working to make broad change so that we support a woman through the entire journey of raising her child.
/ I believe those who chose to have kids should be venerated, not stigmatized. We often don’t adequately support/celebrate those who choose to have and raise children and who do so in non traditional arrangements, or give their children up for adoption. This needs to change.
/ I believe we don’t adequately support or acknowledge those who provide uncompensated child care and support for women who have children and do not have the financial luxury of choosing to stay at home with their children (read, extended family). This needs to change.
/ I believe that men have a shared role in the creation of all pregnancies. Unfortunately, many (but certainly not all) men walk away from the day to day financial and social responsibilities of raising a child resulting from an unplanned pregnancy. This needs to change.
/ I believe many women who have children still do not have the equal ability to build networks and advance their careers or interests, because of the disproportionate amount of time and cost women bear related to raising a child, as compared to men. This needs to change.
/ I believe that there are ways of adding significantly greater punishments for those who attack and murder pregnant women while respecting the Dobson ruling, namely changes to the criminal code for a special category of penalties for doing so.
/ IN THE CONTEXT OF EVERYTHING IVE WRITTEN IN POINTS 1-6 ABOVE, I believe that in order to be equal, a woman must be able to make autonomous, healthy and safe, decisions regarding the management of her fertility. I will always fight to protect this right.
/ I believe there are many in the pro life community who have a genuine love of children, and who fundamentally support women’s equality, and have and would put financial resources and a lifetime of time behind a women who chooses to have a child. They have important voices.
/ I also believe that there are fringe elements of our society that do not believe in the equality of women, and would use the control of a woman’s body and fertility to ensure she stays unequal. These people are not the majority of the pro life movement.
/ It’s also reasonable to expect the movement to forcefully distance itself from these fringe elements.
/ I believe the entire debate on this issue risk being hijacked by actors who seek personal gain from reducing it to a caricature. This needs to stop in order to protect women and children, and every day I will fight for this, even if it means cheesing off those sorts of folks.
/ Happy Mothers Day.
