Asking a politician about their record or their views is not 'gotcha' questioning. It is political journalism.
Maybe it doesn't work on their supporters. Maybe it works on some of them. Maybe it should be combined with a more emotional response on the sense of identity they appeal to.
Fine. But don't suggest we give up on it. Highlighting the views, statements and intentions of those who seek election is the basis democracy operates on.
Call me sentimental, but I don't fancy giving up on that because there are some angry reactionaries on Facebook who are unmoved by it.
