THE GREAT RESET: Over 200,000 people have been laid off in the #tech industry this year, and the flood of new talent has started to change the job market.

Check out Blind's exclusive research - a thread 🧵:
1/ The Great Resignation and the ease of wage hikes when changing jobs may be over.

56% of U.S. professionals said they would accept the same or LESS pay in a new role, per an April 2023 survey by Blind…
2/ The perceived weakness of the job market is why many say they're now willing to accept lower pay.

45% cited market concerns—more than those who picked company culture, return-to-office policy, or even the need for a work visa as their top reason COMBINED Image

Layoffs have begun. Around 3AM PT, members of @dailykos Guild were notified that they were laid off via email. At the same time, our @PMWG union rep received notice that our #layoff-aversion proposal had been rejected in full.
While those employees were told that their employment @dailykos ends tomorrow, @dailykos management has already locked them out of Gmail, Slack, and other job-critical tools. #layoffs
Some of our teams have been decimated. The @DailyKosGuild, more than two years later and still without a contract, has officially lost every founding member. The @dailykos Equity Council is now one-third the size of last year.

Yesterday, members of our Guild unit suddenly lost access to email, Slack, HubSpot, and other vital tools used to do their jobs. Others received deposit notifications for final PTO disbursements. Some saw their @dailykos Staff accounts converted to Community accounts.
We’ve come to the table ready to bargain at every step. We're actively attempting to help @dailykos right itself by collaborating on ways to reduce our people costs. But our negotiations have been complicated by unclear parameters and shifting goalposts.
A cease and desist was issued to @dailykos in response to a change in terms revealed 48 hours before our negotiations deadline, and for underreporting the Guild’s cost-savings achieved through voluntary buyouts. Read about that dispute here:

Right now, @dailykos has our harm-mitigation proposal for consideration, and we’re hopeful they agree that our commonsense, humane solutions are a more equitable way than layoffs to meet our shared goal.
Our proposal recommends cross-training and internal transfers for members potentially impacted by layoffs who would like to remain employed at @dailykos. This is one way to avoid unnecessary harm from #layoffs.
Our proposed options include reconsidering some employees who requested voluntary buyouts and were rejected; six members of DKG have once again offered their jobs to another member.

It's utterly depressing when you're laid off...

Music is one of the best legal drugs. On top it usually has no side effects.

Here's a thread about the tomato playlist I did on spotify...

While everyone is commenting about layoffs (quite frankly how many do personally know what it means), I thought it may help to share a perspective.. from someone who faced this twice in life & saw 2 more in close quarters..

Some lessons from past.. Thread below

In corporate world, layoffs are a reality. One can try to put a logic to it, but it doesn't matter. Logical, Business, Macro Economy or otherwise, it is a reality that can happen.

If one believes their job is secure till retirement, nothing can't be farther from truth

Business reasons, Egos (yes this also is a factor), funding drying up, Economy.. reasons can be quite different.

In every appraisal cycle, their is a "curve-fitting" exercise. Those who are involved know this.

In light of the recent wave of #layoffs from Meta, Redfin, and others, I'm noticing a major increase in stress and general anxiety. Even people with stable #employment are wondering about their future.

To stay safe, here are 5 ways you can future-proof your income: 🧵
1. Explore Freelancing.

Platforms like @Upwork can be a great way to generate some additional income at your own pace.

You can find part-time and full-time opportunities depending on your skill set.

In 2022, I managed to generate over $50,000 from freelance projects.
2. Learn new skills.

Platforms like @coursera provide tons of free learning courses with treasure troves of information.

You can learn at your own pace and add valuable high-income skills.

In 2022, I managed to complete over 4 courses on the platform.

• How structural is this issue?
• Who gets fired? Who gets retained?
• How do employees and employers manage this situation?

The #JobsReport came in at 372,000 jobs gained, the #unemployment rate at 3.6%, which was coupled with #wage growth of 5.1% year-over-year: all solid numbers in a historic context.
Still, when taken in the context of much of the #economic data coming in, last week’s #employment report reemphasized two key tenets of the economy and consequently of #investment markets: 1) the U.S., and indeed the global economy, is tangibly slowing…
…and 2) we are probably past the #employment peak and will likely witness #LaborMarket slowing in the back half of the year.

Core #CPI (excluding those volatile #food and #energy components) came in at 0.6% month-over-month and rose 6.0% year-over-year.
Meanwhile, headline #CPI data printed at a very strong 1.0% month-over-month and came in at 8.6% year-over-year, spiking higher on #shelter, #gas and food costs.
These persistently outsized gains in #inflation are clearly having an impact on business and #ConsumerConfidence. Also, the #Fed’s favored measure of inflation, core #PCE, increased 0.34% in April, bringing the year-over-year figure for the measure to 4.9%, as of that month.

The only thing keeping us from a full blown #TrumpRecession is your consumption. The consumer is strong while all else fails. If you limit your spending until #Election2020 you're helping to get #Trump out of office. RETWEET

Tariffs have increased prices on large appliances and other big purchases. It's in your best (#resister) interest to hold off on any big purchase until after the election. You'll ensure Trump can't boast about the economy, and you'll save money after #Dems are back in power.
You may think interest rates are low, so it's a good time to spend, however as the #TrumpRecession gathers steam the fed will need to lower rates. New #Dem prez will reduce tariffs. That will increase your buying power in 2021 and help @thedemocrats economy flourish.
