Grayling's disastrous probation privatisation programme is finally reversed. Service being taken back into public ownership politics.co.uk/blogs/2019/05/…
It's easy to turn this into another just-how-shit -is-Chris-Grayling story. But we know the answer to that. He is epically, unimaginably shit, on a colossal scale. We knew that ages ago.
The bigger question is: Can we cure ourselves of this ideological zeal for privatisation that demands it even when the minister cannot articulate what the contract is?
In this he was no different to other ministers. Since 1979, this country has been obsessed with the idea that the profit motive is a magic wand you can wave at any problem to make it disappear. It is not.
But to fix that, you don't need to go full Corbyn, as if nationalisation is an end in itself. You just need to treat public service provision as any other issue: On a case by case basis.
I know the chances of this happening are basically zero because we're all mad now, but just putting it out there that we might all be happier if we made decisions on the basis of reason rather than tribal identity.
