Thinking about how when I was in 9th grade, I realized the diagram of the female reproductive system didn’t label the clitoris. I spent like 10 minutes arguing with my teacher, then marched up there to show everyone where it was. Got detention. Worth it.
I then argued with the assistant principal: “That’s like having us look at a map of Asia that doesn’t label China! Are you trying to say there’s something wrong with what God gave us girls?”
And of course, forget the G-spot.
When other kids in that class tried to mock me for it, I said, “Shut up. You should thank me. Don’t you want your boyfriend to know where it is?” They did shut up at that.
What I’m saying is, I bet a lot of other students got that diagram. (And I only knew about the clitoris from my mom’s New Woman magazine.) So a lot of students left without some crucial information.
What kids do learn from that kind of “sex education” is that female pleasure doesn’t count and is too dirty or embarrassing to discuss, but the male anatomy and experience are all-important.
Twenty or thirty years later, the boys in those classes grew up to become Brads or Chads or Scotts who think women don’t really like sex anyway, unless they’re just whores. And the more ambitious of them make laws that betray absolute ignorance & indifference about us.
Oh. The (female) assistant principal asked why 15yo me felt it was so important to know now, and I replied that even if we all wait until we’re married, we have a right to enjoy it.
You should have seen the look on her face when I told her my mom almost died while she was pregnant with my brother, and she was miserable, and if that happened to me, I wanted to at least have fun while I was making the baby.
Damn, it still amazes me how many people, some of them women, don’t see the soundness of that logic.
