Total number of abortions in the US declining steeply with the decline in the birth rate: about 635,000 per year vs more than 1.4 million in peak year 1990.
How do we restore the desire to bear children? Policing and punishing does not seem a very plausible answer.

Self-explanation walks a fine line. Too little, and it looks like you are puffed about by the wind; too much, and you seem self-obsessed. Some answers are called for, but journalists should remember: the readers are here for the issues, not for your inner dramas
But I'll single out 3 for special comment. I have very much changed my mind about same-sex marriage. I explained why in 2011 davidfrum.com/article/i-was-… and over the following decade have come to feel even more strongly that SSM is a positive conservative reform
On climate issues, I have thought for decades that action was needed. I argued for a carbon tax in this book written between 2005 and 2007. amazon.com/Comeback-Conse… I was glad that then candidate Bush endorsed greenhouse regulation in 2000 and sorry he changed his mind in office

Trump has led the US into a trade war against China worse than alone. He's simultaneously fighting trade wars against South Korea, Canada, and other allies. Meanwhile potential allies - Australia, Brazil - are opportunistically replacing US as China's food suppliers
Trump has started the China trade war at the *SAME TIME* as he is threatening two shooting wars, one against Venezuela, another against Iran
In short, Trump has meticulously set the board so as to conduct his policy vs China from a position of maximal weakness. He's hoping the Chinese will not notice. But it seems ... they have.

Why so many pollsters are wrong as well.

The AVERAGE error in WI in 2016 was SIX POINTS!! And all in the same direction.
That tells you a lot. If ALL the polls are wrong in the same direction, it's ideology, not flawed methodology.

Among my favorite traits in others, kindness, humor, intelligence, range & indomitable will.

theatlantic.com/magazine/archi… There’s a lot that’s compelling about @YAppelbaum’s argument for impeachment. But this is just a massive misread of Trump’s views and strategy and likely future actions.
@YAppelbaum First of all, it assumes Trump has any motivation that prevails over his desire for applause and attention. There’s no evidence for this. Perhaps more importantly, it misreads how Trump thinks he wins this, which is by playing to the crowds and leveraging that.
Trump doesn’t want House Democrats going after him, but he has, from the beginning, focused mostly on owning McConnell and Senate Republicans by making them afraid of turning against him. That’s why the shutdown is dragging on and has no foreseeable end.
