Trump has led the US into a trade war against China worse than alone. He's simultaneously fighting trade wars against South Korea, Canada, and other allies. Meanwhile potential allies - Australia, Brazil - are opportunistically replacing US as China's food suppliers
Trump has started the China trade war at the *SAME TIME* as he is threatening two shooting wars, one against Venezuela, another against Iran
In short, Trump has meticulously set the board so as to conduct his policy vs China from a position of maximal weakness. He's hoping the Chinese will not notice. But it seems ... they have.

But I'll single out 3 for special comment. I have very much changed my mind about same-sex marriage. I explained why in 2011 davidfrum.com/article/i-was-… and over the following decade have come to feel even more strongly that SSM is a positive conservative reform
On climate issues, I have thought for decades that action was needed. I argued for a carbon tax in this book written between 2005 and 2007. amazon.com/Comeback-Conse… I was glad that then candidate Bush endorsed greenhouse regulation in 2000 and sorry he changed his mind in office

Total number of abortions in the US declining steeply with the decline in the birth rate: about 635,000 per year vs more than 1.4 million in peak year 1990.
How do we restore the desire to bear children? Policing and punishing does not seem a very plausible answer.

180 countries today reached agreement on a new convention to limit ocean dumping of plastic waste. Among the few non-signers: the United States. reuters.com/article/us-env…
In 2018, the US did adopt - and President Trump did sign - a promising new law to curb plastic waste. plasticsnews.com/article/201810…
And the NAFTA update negotiated with Canada and Mexico - although still unratified by Congress - also had plastic waste restrictions.

The legitimacy of the #CCP regime under Xi is based on the twin pillars of economic growth and nationalism. For the party-state, unifying the mainland and Taiwan is critical to its aspirations of national rejuvenation and erasure of national humiliation.
Why would PRC force a unification as early as 2021? 1) 2021 is the centenary of the #CCP; anniversaries and dates have massive symbolic importance in China's political culture. 2) Xi wants unification to be part of his legacy. This is the only way that he can outshine #Mao.
