Former FBI General Counsel James Baker confirms that Rod Rosenstein's proposal to "wear a wire" on Trump in the Oval Office was taken "deadly seriously" and he provided guidance as to its "legality and practical and operational significance." So yeah, that pretty clearly happened
It makes perfect sense for Rosenstein to pass it off as a "joke" but multiple individuals directly involved in the discussions directly refute that. At the time Rosenstein was also signing off on FISA warrants. And he engaged in other conduct reflecting how seriously he took this
Trump lawyer John Dowd expressed bewilderment and irritation at how Rosenstein handled the Russia investigation. Baker previously testified under penalty of perjury that this was a real proposal. Either way, why not get Rosenstein before Congress to clear everything up?
Rod is apparently tweeting now so maybe people can ask him for clarification @RJRosenstein

Fascism clearly exists to some extent but the over-reliance on hyperbolic, hysterical language has fostered laziness and stultification. A useful exercise is to try to describe phenomena you regard as potentially "fascist" without using the term; it obscures more than it reveals

Chris Hayes welcomed his NBC colleague John Brennan back on the show last night, and Brennan fumed that it was "outrageous" for Trump to declassify material related to the CIA's involvement in the 2016 election. Gee, I can't imagine why the former CIA Director would feel that way
Brennan parrots the Democratic talking point that Trump is endangering national security by releasing this information. That's ALWAYS what "nat sec" officials say when they want to keep damning information repressed. Blanket appeals to "putting lives at risk." It's complete BS
So Trump is simultaneously engaged in a "cover up" and releasing too much information. Makes perfect sense

Now that Russia collusion allegations have evaporated, the long knives are out and the president’s antagonists are watching their backs. They have moved from accusing him of treason to pushing revisionist narratives that try to shift the blame for the debunked probe onto others.
CIA sources immediately objected in the NY Times that assets’ lives would be at risk., Perhaps. But the argument is a bit shopworn, raising the question whether intelligence managers are looking to protect their agents and sources, or aiming to protect themselves.

Former FBI General Counsel James Baker is speaking at the Brookings Institute this morning. He wants to assure Americans that the Russia investigation began for "lawful" reasons and it was "apolitical."
Baker says the tip about George Papadopoulos left the FBI no choice. "It would have been a dereliction of our duty not to investigate this information."

President Trump has long borne a deep resentment over the recusal of AG Jeff Sessions, which many of us viewed as a necessary ethical step. The problem was not the recusal of Sessions but the fact that it was not immediately followed by the recusal of Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein.
The precarious ethical position of Rosenstein just became far more acute with a new report that he ignored demands within the Justice Department to remove himself in 2017.
