I've been a huge fan of John Waters ever since I picked up "Shock Value" as a precocious and impressionable child. I was arguably too young to read it, but nothing could stop me from hoovering up new ideas at every opportunity. theparisreview.org/blog/2019/05/2…
Waters is an oddball's hero. I've always found him extremely relatable, and no more than now when I'm struggling with my own veneer of respectability after decades of being a dusty little border reporter with a fat mouth and ideas no one ever took seriously. It's a lot sometimes.
He may have become respectable but he never sold out to do it. He forced society to make room for him. Fuck yeah! Long live John Waters!
Pink Flamingos was one of the funniest things I ever got to see as a kid, too. I can't quite remember how I managed to watch it - I'm pretty sure I had to bribe a friend of a friend - but it probably is the reason my sense of humor is so fucked up. Well, that and years in radio
Anyway this is a great article and you should totally read it especially if you have any love for John Waters. The only negative thing I can say about him is that he did kick off a phase in my life in which I would sneak out of the house to attend late-night experimental theater
My family thought I was on drugs, which was way cooler than experimental theater, so I just went ahead and let them think that... until now lol
