There are a couple of reasons why people, not just from the Left, can be lulled into a false sense of confidence. The first is that tasks are nearly always more complicated than they seem. The gaps are filled by assumptions that don't always pan out.
The second is the Dunning-Kruger effect, after two psyschologists who concluded after studies that "If you're incompetent, you can't know you're incompetent."

People who were truly smart thought they were dumber than they were while people who were stupid often thought they were smarter than they actually were.
I guess there's a moral in there somewhere but am unsure what it is.
