My thoughts on impeachment and why we need an inquiry now:
1.) The senate has no say over impeachment. It is conducted entirely by the House. The senate conducts the trial; and can decide not to convict or remove him- the house is where they conduct hearings & vote on impeachment
2.) Impeachment is about the process, not the end result. We need impeachment hearings to educate the public about Trump’s crimes before the 2020 election. Most people haven’t read the Mueller Report and simply assume that since he’s still president, what he’s done must not be
that bad. Well, it is that bad. In fact, it’s way worse than most people could possibly imagine. Televised public hearings with witness testimony will shift public opinion on impeachment—just like they did with Nixon and Watergate.
3.) If public opinion shifts strongly enough, the senate may abandon Trump. That’s what happened with Nixon. Senators went to the WH and essentially said “you’re going to be convicted and removed from office unless you resign” and so he resigned rather than go through a long and
humiliating trial. Trump HATES humiliation and would absolutely resign if he knew he was going to be made to look even worse through a painful trial. But even if he didn’t, and if the senate protected him, he would lose by a landslide in the 2020 election.
No amount of Russian interference or GOP voter suppression will be enough to tip the scales to him
4.) No President has ever been convicted or removed. Impeachment is, thus far, in our 243 year history as a nation, the harshest rebuke that a President has ever suffered
as a result of abusing their power. Therefore, for Trump, who has abused this power more than any president in history, and committed more crimes than all of them combined, to not be impeached, sets a horrible precedent for what is acceptable from our commander in Chief.
We need Democrats to stand up and defend the Constitution & the rule of law & democracy not because it will get Trump out of office (it will, albeit indirectly) but because it’s the right thing to do and the Constitution that they swore an oath to defend & uphold demands them to.
