There’s more! The article doesn’t even mention how FB quietly classified “clean energy” and “climate change” as political topics last summer.
I used to boost our Global Weirding episodes on FB to reach friends of people who liked my page, but since our topics were classified as “political” I can’t unless I apply to be a political entity: which I will not, because science isn’t blue or red, no matter what FB says.

The most virulent and sickening attacks I’ve seen here on Twitter have been directed at Canadian female politicians. Some are definitely paid trolls; but all too many of them are Canadians who’ve lost all sense of decency and civility.
I don’t typically block anyone until they’ve demonstrated uncivil behaviour directly at me; but I make an exception for anyone I see using the sexist term “climate barbie”. Sure, you can disagree w @cathmckenna - it’s a free world. But if you can’t do so civilly, don’t.
I also don’t want the fact that many of these accounts appear to be paid trolls to be lost in the noise. Paid by whom to attack Cdn female liberal/ndp politicians, one wonders? 🤔

USGS director Reilly, a former astronaut and petroleum geologist, claims the National Climate Assessment used "inaccurate modeling that focuses on worst-case emission scenarios". There are two problems with this statement. (thread) nytimes.com/2019/05/27/us/…
First, as I explain in detail in this chapters I wrote, RCP scenarios are not actually emission scenarios. They are forcing scenarios consistent with various emissions pathways. Small issue, yes; but it suggests that he doesn't understand the scenarios. science2017.globalchange.gov/chapter/4/
Second, the claim that NCA4 focused only on a "more extreme" scenario is totally false. Across the 1,600 pages of Vol 2, impacts are always quantified for a range of scenarios from extremely low to business-as-usual. Don't take my word; see for yourself: nca2018.globalchange.gov

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

I have been a fan of Arthur C. Clarke for a long-time. His collaboration with Stanley Kubrick yielded one of my favorite movies of all-time ("2001: A Space Odyssey") and his book "Childhood's End" is one of my favorite reads of all-time. /1

My essay is only concerned with climate change-related damages in the US spurred, as I argue, by US actors like the oil majors. I could’ve written about Peruvian villagers suing a German energy giant & melting glaciers in the Andes, but that’s beyond the scope of my article.

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.
