The Supreme Court already heard oral arguments on the census citizenship question. Their decision is due by the end of June. This is a bombshell.
As the NYT reported today, newly unearthed documents show that the push for the citizenship question was explicitly motivated from the start by a desire to provide Republicans, and whites specifically, electoral advantage. nytimes.com/2019/05/30/us/…
And yeah. But it's one thing to say "duh, of course." It's another to have documents showing that putting up the question was part of an explicit strategy to boost the electoral power of "Republicans and non-Hispanic whites" at the expense of Latinos and Dems.
What will the Supreme Court do with this information, and how will it affect the Court's ruling next month? We're about to find out.
I'm poking around looking for informed commentary on the Court's likely next steps on this, so far without luck. If you find some, hook me up.
