Ah, so it's not that you don't think it's homophobic. It's that you think God is homophobic.
"It's not [racism/homophobia/sexism/whatever], it's just reality" drives me up a freaking wall. Yes, Bishop, you think reality is homophobic. People who think reality is homophobic are ... homophobic. That's what the word refers to. That's what the word MEANS.
"I'm not racist, I just think white people have a genetic advantage in intelligence over black people." People have said this to me, and believed it.
And by the way, I was at a Catholic mass just a few weeks ago in which the priest went out of his way to specifically welcome gay and divorced members of the church community. This kind of nastiness isn't intrinsic to Catholicism.
The Catholic Church, like most agglomerations of people, has an institutional existence and an existence as a community. And as with most such agglomerations, the institution reflects the values of the community in an imperfect and limited way.
A survey earlier this year, for instance, found that 61% of Americans supported same-sex marriage. The number of Catholics who did? Sixty-one percent.

So this kind of yammering is as least as much a yawp of frustration against the openness and decency of the American Catholic community as it is a reaction against broader societal trends.
Which is one of many reasons why anti-Catholic bigotry isn't welcome in my mentions.
