@jayrosen_nyu Too harsh Jay. Some days NYT’s A1 looks like an agenda of anti-Trump talking points, maybe one investigative but the rest news stories. I agree that many NYT reporters should call out bs higher up in stories, even work it into ledes. But I don’t fault them ... 1/
@jayrosen_nyu 2 ... for putting outrageous statements on the record or for prying open cracks in an administration that resembles the San Andreas Fault. The latter is going to look at times as if they’re giving a platform to the undeserving; to me that’s a price worth paying because ... 2/
@jayrosen_nyu 3 ... the whole story will be told at some point and we’ll be able to figure out who deserves sympathy and who doesn’t.

I’ve been reading US reporters for many decades. They’re wearing skepticism on their sleeves far more than they used to. Not partisanship but skepticism. 3/
@jayrosen_nyu 4 Being aggressively sceptical is not middle-of-the-roadism. Especially at a time when aggressive skepticism must be deployed in coverage of the entire Democratic field. 4/
@jayrosen_nyu 5 Good reporters are skeptics and interpreters. The better they are at those two things, the better placed they are to defend against “news from nowhere” and “false binary” criticism. This understanding should be prominent wherever news writing and media literacy are taught. 5/5
