Update & Background on the situation in Sudan: The military regime has scrapped all previous agreements with the protest groups and called for elections to be held within 9 months. Casualty figures rising from Monday's violence: activists say more than 30 killed
And hundreds wounded after security forces broke up a protest outside the army headquarters in Khartoum. Media not being allowed to cover the situation freely but still there is a lot of footage of security forces beating protesters + sound of gunfire and video of casualties
The Sudanese Professionals Association calls it a "bloody massacre". The UN, US, UK, EU, AU have condemned the violence. Softer tones from the Arab allies of Sudan's military. The protest groups have called for a campaign of civil disobedience to bring down the military council
The paramilitary Rapid Security Forces (RSF) is the main culprit. It's leader- Mohamed "Hemeti" Hamdan Dagalo - is deputy head of the military regime. His group has been accused of systematic abuses in Darfur among other places
The military and opposition alliance had agreed on a 3 year transition period leading to elections. They'd also agreed on on a legislative assembly but they disagreed over the composition of the sovereign council, which would run the country until election time
As both sides hardened their stances, the talks collapsed. After questions over the unity of the opposition, the protest leaders called for sit-in demonstrations and announced they were cutting all communication with the military. And of course the response was Monday’s violence
