My custom in-ear monitors arrived yesterday, which should be better for traveling as they block sound (effectively also acting as earplugs). The pic shows them next to AirPods.
/ They have detachable cables. The picture shows them attached to a BlueTooth controller that can fit behind the head. I did my nightly walk with them last night, which actually is suboptimal as it's harder to hear cars.
/ On the other hand, there's no chance of them falling out, as they screw into your ears pretty firmly and will not come out without a bit of prying.
/ The extra cable is annoying. It'd be nice if they worked more like AirPods and integrated bluetooth and battery directly into the ear pieces. But the majority of their market is musicians, who want wired connections.
/ These are the cheap ("cheap") $499 versions where they ship you an in-home ear-shaping kit that makes a mold of your ears with heat hardening plastic, which you send back to them, which then uses a 3D printer to make your earphones.
/ For more expensive ones, you can go to a partner somewhere in your local city who scans your ears with a laser to send to the 3D printing machine. The 3D printer doesn't actually make them, but instead makes the mold for them.
/ Music doesn't seem to have as much base as the AirPods, but I suspect that's because they have the proper amount of base in the music instead of jacking it up. Sounds are much more distinct.
/ The song I like to listen to test these things with is this one from Sylver. It's go this weird vibration that comes through on ear pods that you don't really hear on speakers.
