In regards to my "computers are safe enough" thread from the other day is this article that elevators are safe enough. It's the heavy hand of government in search of a problem in order to enrich a few.
Out of over 100-billion elevator rides per year in the United States there are 27 deaths. In contract, there are 1600 deaths per year by people taking the stairs.
Moreover, the deaths aren't from what people fear, the elevator plummeting to your death. Half are because people fall down the shaft through open elevator doors, and the other half from people getting squeezed between the elevator and wall.
More moreover, most of those accidents come from maintenance and construction, not from everyday use. Elevator accidents are more of a threat to the maintenance works than the passengers.
