Until recently, I adamantly believed that a two-state, as difficult and unlikely as it might be, was at least still *possible,* that it could be imagined with a little bit of creativity. I'm not sure I can say that I believe it anymore
That doesn't mean a one-state solution (to me, an oxymoron) is the alternative. People like to say that the status quo is untenable, but it's not clear to me what's so untenable about it. Some variation of the status quo could persist for decades. That, or annexation I guess
When I was in Israel last month, I spoke to a settler. He, to my surprise, supported a one-state solution *with* citizenship for Palestinians. I asked him if he'd be okay with an Arab majority. He said there wouldn't be, because Jews would out-reproduce Arabs over time
I told the settler that even if Jews remained a majority, it would still be pretty tenuous with, say, 60% Jews & 40% Arabs. Wouldn't that be a recipe for conflict? He said, yes, perhaps, but that he would rather have "a struggle over reproduction than a struggle over bullets"
