I have done my first ever blocking.
I used to have a policy against this, and anyway mute is more elegant. But some people are just so unspeakably dreadful, and their angry RTs trigger so many days of abuse, that you have to do the big full stop.
It's telling that after years on here, and experience in the full range of abuse from left to right, the person I finally blocked is a regular commentator on TV and radio.

Against the spirit of the age, but why have the public ask questions in a leadership debate anyway?
The job of journalists is to ask the questions of politicians the public want answered. Beeb did a good job picking questions last night. Pretty much the only thing it got right.
But it doesn't need to be members of the public actually asking them. That creates the problems we've seen today. It prevents politicians being robust, as they can't be seen to be rude to the public.

Assessing Johnson's performance last night. Put aside whether you love or hate him and consider how he actually behaved on its own terms.
On Islamophobia, he faffed his response to an issue which he knows is a weak spot.
On Brexit, he posed tough, but hesitated when the crucial moment came on offering an assurance.

The question is: What exactly is your customs union proposal? That's the only possible way he could bring some of Labour onside. And then the second question is: How many Tory votes would that lose you?
Many Conservative MPs are trying to reassure themselves that May's presentational inadequacy was the sole reason for their failure. In fact, it was just one piece in a jigsaw of incompetence.
Stewart would be much better at making the case than she was. But the core problem remain. Whatever you do with Brexit, it is terrible. The fact of making it real makes it unpalatable.

People are talking about sharing these stories in the media to counter Trump's dangerous lies. I think it's important we do so, but also to recognize the limits.

The "execution" story spun directly out of an interview with Ralph Northam on the subject.

For months now, they have been sharing clips of Northam talking about neonatal palliative care and the difficult decisions parents face and saying that he's admitting to executing babies. That's not just Trump's word. The "pro-lie" movement has been busy spreading it.
You try to debunk Trump's story to a true believer and they'll say, "Nice try, we have Northam on tape admitting to executing babies." And if you ask them to show you this tape, they'll link you to it. Challenge them to point out where he says he executed a baby...

as someone who has legally changed their name in one of the worst states to do that in (NC) and who has a ton of trans friends:
The US should move to the UK model.

15$ and a web form, and you can start using your new name immediately. They mail you a document certifying it.
The requirements in the US are all over the map (literally, and no pun intended) but in NC I had to wait 30 days, get letters from the FBI and the state bureau of investigation , get fingerprinted, do a background search on myself, schedule time with a judge...
and then the judge had final say if it was "allowed" or not. so they could veto my new name for any reason, if they didn't like my reasons or my new name.
this cost around 500$ in the end? some of those costs could be waived if I could prove I was too poor to pay them.
