I think Dems are making a tragic mistake being lead by what is better or worse in the race against Trump in 2020. This can only lead down a path of fear, worry, missed opportunities and compromised values. Inspire the public by being bold, principled & daring. Can’t predict 2020.
Political calculation begins where moral vision ends. You have to decide which you’re going to follow.
I’m not saying that one should operate without strategy; I’m saying that strategy can’t be your religion, your guiding light, for it it is you will never take a chance on doing the brace, audacious things that history records and applauds.
For instance, I absolutely HATE that so many Dems are basing their primary picks on who they feel is more likely to defeat Trump. That strategy is doomed to failure. If Dems continue this they get a candidate as an instrument rather than an inspiration. That person won’t win.
Who are you, Democrats? Serious question. Answer it. Do you truly believe in the answer you give. Does that answer lift and inspire you and give you hope for a better, greater America? If so, TRUST THAT! Choose a candidate that embodies that answer. Demand that your reps do too.
And for God’s sake (just in case he or she exists), please stop putting all your eggs in the “working-class white voter” basket. Some candidates are building their whole campaign around being able to appeal to this one demographic. Focus more on the faithful than the fickle.
When people — or even parties — are they are on the right side of things morally, legally, spiritually, when they speak the truth forthrightly with the power of conviction, when they are genuine and authentic rather than craven, people see the light in it and are attracted to it.
As you can probably tell, I’m writing my next column on Twitter. Lol. I often do that. Don’t be surprised if you see some of this, word for word, in my next column. #TwitterIsMyWritersNotebook
