I was in high school, about 16 years old, had dropped acid that day. That evening I lay in bed, still tripping, quietly listening to the FM radio when a song I had never heard before, from an artist I had never heard before came on the radio. 1
Weird trippy chords backed a gravelly voice that sang, “They call me Doctor John. I’m known as The Night Tripper.” It kinda blew my mind, as the radio was obviously talking directly to me. 2
He continued, “Got my satchel of gris-gris in my hand.” WTF was gris-gris? My mind was expanding as I connected with this strange, amazing person on the radio who sang to me. 3
There’s no second chapter to this story, except that, for the last 50 years, Dr John Rebennack and I have had a…connection. RIP Dr. John. 4
