I started my morning early here at the Hennepin County Government center for the Mohamed Noor sentencing. Follow this thread and @kare11 main account for details. Hearing starts at 9am. Noor faces 10-15 under the guidelines. #JustineDamond #NoorTrial
Noor’s team is asking Judge Quaintance to depart from the guidelines and give probation. We have a camera in the courtroom but cannot stream or report while in progress, per judge’s order #JustineDamond #NoorTrial
The Noor juror whom I've been corresponding with hopes Noor gets a lenient, or minimum sentence today. He says he found Noor very sympathetic and although he stands by all three verdicts 100%, and "clearly time needs to be served for the crime," he does not see a bad person.
To date, I believe this is the only juror who has publicly shared information about their deliberations. Sometimes jurors attend sentencing to see how the case finishes, so I'll see if anyone shows. #NoorTrial #JustineDamond
Don Damond is here with his son. Noor's attorneys are here. I'm going up to the courtroom now and losing my electronic devices. Check back here and @kare11 to see how the sentencing unfolds. #NoorTrial #JustineDamond
Noor received 12.5 years in prison
The judge rejected the defense arguments to go below the guidelines. She gave the presumptive sentence right in the middle of the guideline.
Very emotional victim impact statements from Don Damond and family and Justine’s parents brother and sister in law. Plus emotional video played in court.
Judge Quaintance said that although Noor is clearly sad he killed Justine, he takes no responsibility for his action. Still believes was justified
Noor apologized to Don Damond, said that he wanted to meet with him and talk with him about it, called the impersonal nature of the court system dehumanizing
When Don gave his victim impact statement, he did it in the form of a letter to Justine, which made it very poignant.
The impact statements were all sad, but Justine’s sister in law Katarina painted a particularly vivid picture of how Justine’s death affected her family. After wailing on the phone with Justine’s father learning the news, she heard her child’s voice behind the bedroom door—
“What’s wrong, mommy?” her child asked. Katarina went into “mama bear mode,” telling her kids nothing is wrong and everything will be all right. After they told them that night, the kids still suffer anxiety. Absolutely crushed me to hear this story.
Noor's former partner Matthew Harrity was in the courtroom. The judge said the jury told her the most troubling thing they heard is that Harrity's philosophy is to do whatever it takes to go home alive at the end of the night -- instead of police philosophy of protect and serve.
Tom Plunkett, Noor's attorney: We are disappointed with the Court’s decision to send Mohammed Noor to prison for 150 months. The tragedy surrounding this case has only deepened. We have concerns with the process that will need to be addressed. We are not done fighting...
I just heard from Don Damond, who says no sentence makes them happy, but they're pleased Justice for Justine was served. He believes this sentence has a better chance of changing police culture than the 1y1d proposed by Noor's attorney. "May officers everywhere take note"
Watch our full report on today's sentencing at 5pm -- then I'm signing off for the day! Appreciate your support. Have a good weekend. @kare11
