We’re a group of Aussies in the USA who help former Manus and Nauru detainees here, and we have something to say about the Medevac legislation and offshore healthcare 👇 #Thread
We’re not political, but the fact is that healthcare on the islands catastrophically bad, particularly for women. We know this because of the many, many of untreated issues refugees arrive with in the USA...
Botched vaginal tear repairs. Leaky heart valves. Untreated fungal infections. Stomach infections. Severe skin conditions. Former detainees have to navigate the confounding US healthcare system to get the vital, basic treatment they should have received years ago...
“It’s absolutely disgusting that people with serious conditions are being given this third world treatment,” a doctor who helps us said...
We support refugees who have gone without basic medications which cost less than $20 (unsubsidised) at any pharmacy in Australia. This is despite millions of taxpayer dollars being paid to health contractors on Manus and Nauru...
And no – none of the refugees here are accused rapists, murderers, pedophiles or terrorists – every single one has passed President Trump’s ‘extreme vetting’ process. They’re people who want to get on with their lives.
And no – none of them have been given $70,000 to come here, another of the myths that seems to be pervasive. They come here with barely anything and are handed debt notices of over $15,000 AU to repay their flights. They are happy when we send them socks and a winter jacket.
We don’t have a Soundcloud, but you can join our mailing list here. We send practical, direct ways to help individual refugees - and we won’t clog your inbox👇 ads-up.org/join-ads-up
When the last families off Nauru landed in the US, they were handed debt notices to repay their flights (yes, seriously). For families arriving with nothing and getting by on the minimum wage, the average debt of $12,000AU can be crushing. RT, Chip in👇 gofundme.com/help-nauru-fam…
