I've written on several occasions that the politics of climate change were a sort of dress rehearsal for Trumpism in general. You have the same combination of corruption with adolescent belligerence: it's both about giving money to big donors and owning the libs 1/
What we're seeing on auto emissions is an illustration of how these motivations can end up coming into conflict. Auto companies wanted looser regulation, but not a total reversal and a destructive conflict between Trump and California 2/ nytimes.com/2019/06/06/cli…
For now, at least, it looks as if the desire to own the libs (and destroy Obama's legacy) is dominating the profit motive: even with the whole industry pleading with Trump to back down and make a deal, he's determined to Make Smog Great Again 3/ latimes.com/business/la-fi…
This might end up being a Mexico scenario: sound and fury, ending with a de facto Trump climbdown that he pretends is a victory. But CA Democrats may be less willing than AMLO to give Trump even a symbolic "tweetable delivery". 4/

After the Stephen Moore debacle, Trump is once again, with Judy Shelton, trying to install a Fed governor who warned repeatedly and wrongly about easy money causing runaway inflation during the financial crisis, but is now on board with slashing interest rates for Trump 1/
These two episodes, combined with the response of more mainstream hard-money types to the Moore nomination – either endorsement or silence – suggest to me that we need to reevaluate what all that inflation fear mongering was about 2/
I used to think that it was mainly genuine if wrong-headed conviction, with an admixture of cynical politics/economic sabotage: these people were against easy money in general, but especially if it might help a Democratic president 3/

A lot of people baffled by Trump's assertion that homelessness is a problem that started two years ago, and that he might do "something" about it. Look, this is the guy who thinks "Western liberalism" means San Francisco 1/ nytimes.com/2019/07/02/us/…
But I think there's a broader context to his delusions. Remember his "American carnage" inaugural address? In Trump's vision, American cities are in a state of social collapse – because that's what he remembers from his youth. In his head, it's always 1975 2/
The reality is that while yes, there is homelessness, and it's terrible, big cities are in relatively good shape these days, while social collapse, with surging mortality from deaths of despair, is taking place in much of white, rural America. 3/

First, where did Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan plan come from? (George Soros, perhaps? Foreign-funded radicals?) No. It came from Albertans. A volunteer panel led by @andrew_leach spoke w 1K residents in-person and heard from 25K+ online. 2/24
The panel also engaged with 350+ stakeholders and met w Aboriginal Peoples in three cities, and received hundreds of detailed submissions from NGOs, industry groups and others. 3/24

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

My essay is only concerned with climate change-related damages in the US spurred, as I argue, by US actors like the oil majors. I could’ve written about Peruvian villagers suing a German energy giant & melting glaciers in the Andes, but that’s beyond the scope of my article.

1. I didn't realize how badly Trump has eviscerated access to federal #climate data, so I went and looked at the USGS site.
2. In December, there were 5,932 climate science items linked there (9 were just pictures). Today there are 416 and 292 are just pictures.
3. In December 2016, 320 of those items were links to #climate data. Today, 0 links to data. 5,271 were web links. Now, 0 web links.
