While there’s a lot wrong with our country’s drug policy, the popular idea that simple possession of a small amount of cocaine for personal use would usually result in a prison sentence is wrong.

The Drugs Sentencing Guideline provides a starting point of a fine.
The statistics for 2018 indicate that 13,638 people were dealt with by the criminal justice system for possessing a class A drug.

5,771 were cautioned.
4,328 were fined.
923 received a community order.
308 a suspended sentence.
491 immediate custody.
Of those custodial sentences, some will have been passed concurrently to longer custodial sentences passed for other offences (e.g. a man stopped in possession of a knife and a wrap of cocaine may get 6 months for the knife and 1 month concurrent for the cocaine).
