A distinguished friend told me that he had resolved never to be alone with any woman except his mother or wife. If you're just a nobody you don't have to do this, but the more of a somebody you are the more prudent this advice becomes.
The old chaperone rules had a rational basis, which though you may not approve of, were founded in genuine risk aversion. For a while they went away. But it looks like they're coming back.
