The human gut #microbiome never ceases to amaze me. Now a discovery of a bacterium that coverts Type A or B blood to type O, with big implications for blood transfusion.

Today new data marks an advance towards the individualized diet
1. We knew our glucose response to food was highly variable and unique

2. At #ADA2109 and #Nutrition2019, @timspector and colleagues reported the same for triglycerides and insulin levels in a large cohort of twins. The variability was also noteworthy in identical twins.

3. The results summarized, emphasizing that the variability in response to food in these 3 metabolic metrics is striking, that they don't track each other, and that much of the heterogeneity is not genetically determined. The gut #microbiome is an important driver.

Gut microbiome stuff is very cool, but still much in its infancy. This analysis suggests that more things that allow fermentation and production of short chain fatty acids helps protect against early onset Type 1 Diabetes.

At least in white kids (who are generally more at risk) of this type of diabetes.

Also of note that it's the function, not the type of flora/fauna that seems to make a difference. So it doesn't matter what species, just what they do.
The next step will be a difficult one. Larger studies that identify if the variability in microbiome can be divided into subgroups of people, disease conditions, or microbiome. Also working from the other end, trying to identify the signals that effect the protection/risk.
