I want to share a few common mistakes I keep seeing in interviews at Google, with suggestions for what you can do instead:
1) Don't say a question is too easy for you. Instead, nail the question quickly and cleanly. Your interviewer will likely ask a harder one next. If you say it's too easy you risk coming off as arrogant, especially if there is a small chance you make a mistake while overconfident!
2) Don't ask personal questions about your interviewer (age, nationality, sexual orientation, etc.). Instead, ask what their team is, how long they've been at the company, whether they like it, and so on.
3) If you are sick or tired...like if your flight was delayed until 4am...ask your recruiter or first interviewer to reschedule. Sick and tired people interview terribly. You come across as unenthusiastic, distracted, and your logic centers probably are foggy.
4) Answering a question with a hint is better than not at all. If you are 25min in and stuck, explicitly ask for a hint so you can progress. An experienced interviewer should help you through this without asking, but sometimes interviewers aren't experienced.
5) Come prepared with a few questions about the company or team. If there is extra time, you'll be told you can ask questions. This is still part of the interview! Ask a question that shows genuine interest.
6) If you bomb an interview, ask for a short break before the next one. Go to the bathroom, take some deep breaths. Drink some cold water. Bombing one interview doesn't doom you! But you need to prevent it from carrying over into your other interviews.
