Due to hostility, ethnic minority people were more likely to settle in close-knit communities around the Cardiff dock area. The docks were known as ‘lawless’ areas, where hostels for foreign sailors were tolerated alongside brothels and gambling holes.
Racial prejudice and hostility pushed ethnic minority communities into these spaces, with certain parts of Cardiff considered dangerous no-go zones by ethnic minority communities.
This created segregated living conditions, which further built tension between people and strengthened the split throughout Cardiff. The consequences that this tension caused can be seen through the outbreak of the #CardiffRaceRiots1919. Does this still hold a legacy to this day?
Tiger Bay in Cardiff became a home for people of many ethnicities from all over the world and the social and cultural centre for diverse communities. Take a look at these characters from 1950, their descendants could still be living in Cardiff today.
Figures show that Cardiff is becoming less segregated. Take a look at this study from 2011 which shows population change in Cardiff: bit.ly/2mGwUrb but is this always a good thing or also a sign of gentrification? What do you think? #CardiffRaceRiots1919
The study describes mixed ethnic identity as ‘the most intimate form of integration of peoples’. What does it mean to be ‘mixed’ and Welsh? Check out this film on ‘mixed’ Welsh identities by @GavinPorter_ to find out more bbc.in/2ToS1kR
