When people present shit like the Austin bomber being from a close-knit community that checks on each other, all I hear is that they saw who he was and it wasn't bad enough (read directed at white people enough) for anyone to betray whiteness by correcting him or telling someone.
All these white bombers and mass shooters are supposedly from close knit communities so maybe we really need to reevaluate what our reactions are to behavioral red flags.
We need to stop ignoring casual bigotry in our families and social groups.

Call that shit out. Stop allowing it around you.

Push it to the fucking margins bc it's killing people.
White supremacy is so ingrained in our society that a lot of people don't even realize they're hearing it through the dog whistles and circular logic and misleading/intentionally misinterpreted numbers.

How do we educate people on a problem they won't acknowledge and can't see?
I've been thinking about this a lot. I think it's true, but not in a way that allows white people to think that he lived in a city full of bigots and so we no longer have to question our culturally engrained white supremacist tendencies.

Like, yes, some people probably thought what he thought to a lesser degree than murder and some people are probably secretly glad and some people probably disagreed with him but no one stopped him or checked him and that's the important part bc it's SO normal for us to not.a
We need to be checking our loved ones when they even START to flirt with bigotries.

Stop letting little things slide out of politeness. Confronting people isn't polite but killing people is much worse.
Pay attention.

The Bystander Effect: Every individual person is less likely to help a person in need the more people are around.

I know your bigoted friends see a lot of people but stop shrugging off calling them out for the next person. Do the work.

So this has been RTed a lot more than I'm used to and I just want to say that nothing I'm saying is new or original and I'm probably not the person you need to hear from on this.

Find more Black women to read and lurk a lot/term search before opening your mouth to them.
Hey.

If you're white, you don't get to absolve yourself of your complicity in racism.

IF YOU ARE WHITE, YOU HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY BEEN COMPLICIT IN RACISM AND PROBABLY STILL ARE EVEN IF UNINTENTIONALLY.
