This is interesting on mindfulness as “secular spirituality” that encourages complacency and retreat into the self. theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2… (It’s a fairly punishing read though; every other word is “mindfulness” and it feels a bit heavy on opinion and light on evidence.)
I absolutely buy the decline of spiritual meat space as a factor in social isolation though, and wonder if our reliance on phones-self-social graph-google is a *consequence* of failing social infrastructure, rather than necessarily being the cause.
Also, I’ve been wondering for a while what didn’t quite work for me about this book penguinrandomhouse.com/books/557044/p… and I *think* it’s that it relies on people to use sympathetic physical space in an extrovert way, rather than nurturing deeper social bonds.
I mean, the tldr for “why are we so individualised now?” is that it’s probably not because phones or civic design or spirituality or libraries or compassion fatigue, but because of capitalism, so happy Friday everyone!
