“Farmer’s son becomes doctor….. makes family proud”. This sounds like the kind of achievement that every Indian would be proud to cheer on. Sadly, this story has a sad ending.

Soon after joining residency at the Department of Pediatrics at PGI – Rohtak, Dr Omkar discovered first hand what many in the profession have known but chosen to keep quite about. You see, its one thing to face an angry mob but what do you do when the devil is your own backyard.

The head of the department allegedly, ensured that the department made life miserable for all of its residents.

Complete lack of support in medicolegal cases, written memos and complaints for trivial issues, repeated thesis corrections beyond the due date to ensure adequate harassment and of course the threats of being failed in the final exam if her wished weren’t granted.

And if that wasn’t enough statements like, “I do not care whether you live or die”, surely sent the message home. The doctors worked in areas wrongly designated as ICU’s without so much as an IV set. Yet, they chose to keep working because that’s what you’re supposed to do.

So coming back to the story now. Dr Omkar was told he couldn’t attend his sister’s wedding, being threatened that if he did he’d be failed. For someone who’s working 12-14 hours a day, without any real off days, the hospital can often seem like a prison cell.

Also, did I mention he wasn’t being paid for the past ONE AND A HALF YEARS? Yeah, that too.

So he did the unthinkable. On the 13th of June, 2019, he went to his room and hanged himself. The administration at PGI Rohtak has decided, they want no part of this. When the family came for the body not one of them met the family, let alone console the family for their loss.

The residents have come together and written an official complaint. But nothing much seems to be happening.
#justiceforomkar is being used by his colleagues on to spread the news of this incident. Do your bit and ensure such rot is exposed.

She is absconding. The Resident Doctors Association of PGI Rohtak are on strike, and will continue to do so till the guilty is punished.

Update 2: A counter FIR had been filed a gd against doctors protesting. Parents of the residents are being called and threatened that of agitation is not withdrawn careers are likely to suffer. Despite this the RDA is continuing its strike.#justiceforomkar
