Kevin Sorbo is trending, because of this tweet. It's a good demonstration of our increasing polarization. Nobody seems interested in actually changing his mind, but only shouting louder at him. Also, it's a meme -- he's just repeating the argument without thinking it through.
That Sorbo's statement is just a mindless meme is shown by searching for the key words on twitter. This is part of our polarization: people don't come up with their own original arguments, but just repeat attractive arguments by others.

You can't then have a 'debate', because the person who repeats a meme isn't in a position to defend it.
Though in this instance, the other side doesn't seem interested in rational debate either, so I guess it's a push.

Yup.
Though I interpret this differently. I don't think it mean speaking out when everyone around you cheers, but speaking out against the cheers.
I think it means we need to focus on actual debate, citing data and such, not shouting meaningless rhetoric because it makes us feel good. It means understanding a thing, not cherry picking part of it because it makes your outrage feel good.
The major Nazi opponents were the Communists. That didn't mean they were the good guys. Communists (in Soviet Russia) ended up being even more racist and killing more people than the Nazi's did. Holodomor alone killed as many Ukrainians as Hitler Jews

1/ This question asks: "why would you want a non-random random function". This is a common thing, so I thought I'd explain it.
2/ One example is games, like NetHack or the 3D version from Blizzard known as "Diablo". In the game, you descend many layers into dungeons and fight monsters. The map for each level consisting of rooms and tunnels is laid out "randomly".
3/ Only it's not "random". A single 32-bit random number is used to 'seed' a predictable sequence, which determines how hundreds of levels and thousands of rooms are laid out. Saving the game means only saving that one number.

So this thread happened a year ago yesterday.

I remember writing it after listening to leaked audio of children crying in detention camps, and the workers trying to console them, then breaking down in tears as my own child slept nearby.

20 million views later, some thoughts:
1. We’re still trying to do the thing I was talking about: deterring desperate migrants through harsh, inhumane, and immoral detention conditions. The numbers of people imprisoned have skyrocketed in the past year, with no end in sight. The goal remains the same: Deterrence.
2. Most of the people who spread this think it’s me dunking on Obama or owning the libs. It’s not. The message, which I might have delivered more clearly, is non-partisan.

Deterring migrants through cruelty, imprisonment, and death is America’s official border security policy.

Bernie's polling is decent, but that he does the 2nd-best against Trump (after Biden) is partly an artifact of name recognition. For instance, Buttigieg polls worse than Bernie vs. Trump. But Buttigieg actually has better favorables than Bernie among voters who know who he is.
It's certainly a messy relationship. Some liberals, including Bernie, have decent (though not great) polling. Some moderates don't. But favorability ratings, which allow voters to say they don't recognize a candidate, are a better way to assess this stuff than head-to-head polls.

You have to adjust for name recognition, though. Biden, at just south of 30 percent, is still something like a 2:1 underdog. And Bernie's position at 20 percent, as I wrote yesterday, is tenable but not great.
Per the chart above, Buttigieg's position is roughly as good as Bernie's on a "polls only" basis, or maybe a bit better. Empirically, you'd slightly prefer to be polling at ~10% with low name recognition than ~20% with high name recognition.

I feel like driving up some controversy, so how about a thread of Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions! You know the drill, one like = one take/opinion.

Start easy: the blunt awkwardness/cringe of 'Blurryface' is the point of taking the piss out of Tyler. I stand by my light 9/10.
2. I don't hate Nickelback's 'Dark Horse' - it's easily a record for them at their most tasteless, but the frat-bro swagger of it helps some of their better hooks.
3. 'Fireflies' by Owl City is a genuinely terrific song that captures precocious, starry-eyed wonderment better than few others in the 2000s.

It is SPECTACULARLY lame, but that's why it works.
