Excited to share this new paper "Productivity, prominence, and the effects of academic environment" with @samfway @alliecmorgan and @DanLarremore, out today in @PNASnews pnas.org/content/early/… Here’s a little summary: 1/7
Previously, we showed how faculty at higher prestige departments tend to be much more productive. But, since faculty in prestigious departments also tend to hire prestigious PhDs, it's unclear which of these—PhD or faculty prestige—drives this higher productivity 2/7
Obviously, both PhD and faculty prestige could be important, so we needed a way to (1) control for PhD location to measure the effect of faculty prestige, and (2) control for faculty location to measure the effect of PhD prestige. This led us to use a matched-pair design 3/7

Hypothesis: university prestige shapes the flow of scientists, which determines which scientific ideas get worked on, where. Prestige predicts who hires whose graduates as faculty (advances.sciencemag.org/content/1/1/e1…), and they carry scientific ideas with them. Via simulation, we show that ideas born at elite universities can spread exponentially further than equally good ideas from less elite places 2/5
We also tested whether hiring has influenced the spread of 5 real scientific ideas. Here's the spread of “topic modeling” (1992-2011), which we traced through the literature via expert-curated keywords, including LDA, PLSA & PLSI (#dataviz here by the fantastic @mckweller) 3/5

If we are going to get out of the messes we are in, I believe we have to start with a more accurate image of ourselves and the world of which we are a part. A thread about #system boundaries, abortion bans, climate change, gun safety, and more.
We each are flows, more like flames or whirlpools than rocks or billiard balls, in constant exchange with the 'environment. Your 'boundaries' are so much more fluid than everyday perception (in this western industrial growth society at least) suggests.
I mean this literally - not metaphorically. What was 'not you' moments before you drank a glass of water now is 'you.'

I was looking through the newly released report of Nigeria's National Nutrition and Health Survey, and then going back to see what obtained from 2010. For the most part, it's a story of PROGRESS! But slow progress. So, I thought I'd share with you guys. Graph showing reduced prevalence of severe, moderate and global acute malnutrition in Nigeria. Very slow reduction especially between 2015 and 2018

My next paper topic: urban planning for succession or for immutability?
New Urbanism arose from this question: what would be better than a subdivision or a mall? A more complex subdivision/mall hybrid, based on traditional building codes. By hybridizing, it increased the financial and legal burden of the developer, and saw limited success.
The new urbanist project saw car-dependency as a design problem to be solved locally, without considering that subdivisions and shopping malls may be optimal solutions for the context within which they were built.

(1) I survived a deadly #earthquake in 2011, so watching #hurricanes & other disasters has become a major interest of mine.

All I want is to help save lives & property.

The CA Democrats' reaction to their #wildfires crisis is very telling.

Many voters will #WalkAway.
(2) It's very simple to understand WHY California's #wildfires have worsened in the last 10 years or so.

Natural & plantation forests have been badly mismanaged. (Something we can change.)

Naturally occurring climate change is also a factor. (Something we can't change,)
(3) Democrats want you to ignore the factors we CAN change, such as the mismanagement of forests, & to focus on the factor we CAN'T change: The sun driving the cycle of warming & cooling that's gone on since the planet formed.
