Today's Hope Hicks fiasco underscores the huge risk for Dems in refraining from impeachment hearings.

@tedlieu @steve_vladeck Yes, the question of whether impeachment hearings would maximize Dem oversight leverage is disputed.

But if Dems refrain, and lose some of these battles, we will NEVER KNOW if that would have worked. Oversight will be neutered, and it will be too late:

Carlson said a costly quagmire was everything Trump ran against.

But a dangerously false idea related to Carlson's claim is taking hold. It needs pushback.

It’s a story that Tucker draws on regularly as well, in his sermons against elites as a kind of prophet of Trumpian nationalism.

Biden's refusal to back off of his comments on segregationists is badly undermining his ability to relitigate our racial past against Trump.

In his announcement, he said, "we have to remember who we are."

Well, he's suffering a memory lapse.

Biden says that the Senate used to be a period of "civility," whereas now you're "the enemy."

James Eastland and Herman Talmadge literally depicted the civil rights movement as "the enemy" for years and years.

Here's the issue with Biden's comments.

If he's going to be the guy who relitigates our racial past against Trump, as his announcement video telegraphs, he's got to signal a recognition of the *full* history of the civil rights movement and the Senate:

At his Florida rally, Trump lied and lied and lied about the economy.

Why?

The answer: Trump has a serious disconnect on his hands.

Voters like the economy, but hate Trump's policies and don't credit them for it.

I can’t believe the extent to which @VirginiaDEQ is, in all seriousness, treating what sounds like two newspaper ads as community outreach. It is also clear that no Af Am outreach was made at all.
The speaker at the mic now is arguing no African American outreach was needed because the Board is Supervisors included black members.

A note on #impeachment -

In a court of law, under non-presidential circumstances, impeachment is a tool litigation attorneys use to discredit the opposing side's witnesses at trial. When said witness takes the stand under oath attys. present evidence contrary to what the witness
claims. This weakens the other side's case by discrediting impeached witnesses's testimony. Once a witness has been impeached - by presentment of inconsistent testimony - the judge/jury can no longer use the impeached witnesses's testimony in reaching a verdict.
Simply put, they aren't trustworthy. In the case of Presidential impeachment that broad definition of impeachment applies, but the impeachment tool is used for a very different purpose. Under the Constitution, a sitting President cannot be tried in a court of law for anything.

House debate is presented, then some private deliberation takes place in the Senate and then the Senate take up a debate and conviciton vote, this public debate and conviction could last weeks, each day forcing republicans to debate and go on record on trump...

“He’s just not worth it” is brilliant messaging.

Setting aside the actual question, this message blows up GOP messaging in advance of 2020.

Pelosi is saying to the GOP, “You want to make this election about defending that pathetic orange sniveling bully? Have fun with that.”
Pelosi goes on to say that “unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan” we shouldn’t go down the road of impeachment.

BIPARTISAN is the key word there.

“Compelling and overwhelming” evidence exists.

But Republicans stand by Trump anyway.

Our Founders anticipated someone like Trump. They never anticipated a full 50% of lawmakers would support that person no matter what.

That reality puts Pelosi and other Dem leaders in a challenging position.

Without some GOP participation, impeachment will be mere theater.

Trump's behavior absolutely warrants — even demands — #impeachment. And this is without #Mueller or #CohenTestimony. But the GOP will subvert the Constitution to protect him. And House Dems refuse to do it, even though polls show majority support.

And to the argument that the Senate won't convict, that doesn't matter. The PROCESS of impeachment will affirm that the rule of law still matters, and it can focus the national spotlight on the sheer magnitude of Trump/Pence's corruption.
