Gulbadan is such a charming name.

Evokes memories of 1960s bollywood, and stars and starlets running around trees in Gulmarg
I understand the name of the cricketer is Gulbadin, but somehow I keep reading it as Gulbadan :)
Interestingly there was a "Gulbadan Begum" in Indian history

The youngest daughter of Mughal Emperor Babar, and the half sister of Humayun

She was the author of Humayun-Nama, an account of her half brother's life!

Those who claim Football / Hockey were more popular than Cricket before 1983 never give any data points or even any anecdotal argument to back it

1983 boosted the popularity in Northern India

But in the great urban centers - Bombay, Bangalore, Madras - Cricket was always No 1
Calcutta an exception, though Eden Gardens was no less crazy about Cricket

I have first hand information from elders who lived in Bombay, Bangalore, Chennai for much of 50s-70s, and they do vouch for Cricket's pre-eminence
Even dreary test matches attracted packed houses for much of the 60s-70s, almost without exception

There is a tendency among "nationalists" on both the Left and Right to decry Cricket as a colonial leftover

But this myopic attitude does not recognize the reasons for Cricket's immense popularity in India

Why is Cricket so much more popular than Football, also a British import
There is a reason

And it has to do with the compatibility of Cricket with Indian temperament and culture
Cricket deep down is a sport that values diversity

And so does Indian culture

It is not a sport that "demands" you to be an athlete

I disagree in part with my hometown MP Tejasvi Surya here

The Yoga of Patanjali is v much dualistic
Its metaphysics is closer to that of Sankhya than it is to Advaita

There are Yoga texts that accept Advaita premises like "Yoga Yajnavalkya"

But Patanjali is more influential
This may beg the question...

What about the Bhagavad Gita - which is also a Yoga text, in its own right...

The Gita is not just a text of Yoga, but a Vedantic text. But its philosophical position differs based on interpretation
So it can be dualistic if you subscribe to Madhva's reading
Qualified Monism if you subscribe to Ramanuja's commentary
Monism (Advaita) if you subscribe to Shankara Bhashya

This is in sharp contrast to Patanjali Yoga Sutras, which is unambiguously a dualistic text

Based on this, here is a theory that I have formulated.

There is a strong connection between the two.
