REVEALED: The agony of young brides brought to Britain as "wombs for rent" - then taken back to Pakistan and abandoned like used commodities. Seven pages of investigation and reaction in today's @TheSTMagazine
The women have not seen their children in years. Nadia Husain, 37, in Rawalpindi, said: "My husband doesn't let me talk to my boys. He says mummy is crazy, mummy doesnt love you." She last saw them 12 years ago. The Home Office won't let her come back to Britain to fight for them
In Lahore, Saba showed me the remants of her old life with her children in east London: an Oyster card, an Iceland bonus card and three Sure Start library cards for her children, who she may never see again.
Naz Shah, shadow women & equalities minister, sees these cases in Bradford. She said: "It's the most vile form of misogyny to abandon women once they've been used for their reproductive capacity. The Home Office must treat this as DV and trafficking of women" (@NazShahBfd)
Baroness Warsi, chair of the Tory party, said: "We must support these women and end a system that effectively keeps mothers and children apart and favours their alleged abusers." (@SayeedaWarsi)
And Jess Phillips, who has seen this in her own constituency, says: "The attitude is, ‘They’re not British, they’re not our problem’. But the suffering of British children means these women are our moral responsibility.” (@jessphillips)
Only a few women make it back - often after fighting the Home Office for years. Sidra Khan is now with her children and managing a McDonalds in Birmingham. She said: "I felt my kids slipping away from me. I feel so unlucky, but also so, so lucky, after what I've been through".
