In a few hours I'm getting on a plane to Stuttgart. Over the next week, I'm heading up north to Halle, to interview Prof. Harald Meller about the mysterious Nebra Sky Disk - the earliest depiction discovered of the night sky... /1
I'll be visiting the Museum for Pre-History in Halle, in Saxony, where the Disk is kept, and also the Arche Nebra, close to the site of the discovery of the Disk. /2
I'll also probably be going to the Heuneburg, close to Stuttgart - possibly site of the earliest 'city' north of the Alps. The state government of Baden-Württemburg is spending millions upgrading the site for visitors. /3

Those who have followed me for a while know that I love telling the story about Bertha Benz and the first long-distance car ride in history.

Well, @MercedesBenz just made a big-budget period ad about it.
The only thing that would improve that is Bertha pulling out an egregiously futuristic laser pistol on the line, 'Do you have ten litres of ligroin or not?'.
Also, pretty sure this is the first scene of 'Dark' Season 3.

Sometimes you come across an archaeological find that reinforces the shifting of perceptions of the body over time. Meet the 'Shamaness of Bad Dürrenberg'... /1
In 1934, during work in a park in the German town of Bad Dürrenberg, in modern Sachsen-Anhalt, a grave was found. It continued two bodies - a woman, aged 25 - 30 and a child between 4 - 6 months old, sex unknown. /2
Testing revealed the grave to date from 5500 to 6500 BCE. That is to say, the grave was around 8,500 years old. That places it during the Mesolithic era.

The woman was found in a seated position, the child between her legs. /3

Hey friends, do you have depression? Anxiety? PTSD? Some other mental health issue that occasionally puts you into a crisis and you feel like you need someone's support but don't get what you need?

I'm going to walk you through how to make an action plan.
This is something that might take days or weeks to make and is usually best worked on when you're feeling OK and fairly positive, though there are places when taking notes when you ARE having a bad spell might be good.

Just having one makes me feel a lot better, though.
1) When you're feeling well, how do you know it? This can be a difficult question if you experience dissociation, so what we want to focus on in your action plan is stuff that can be observed.

What do you do? What language do you use? What does your voice sound like?

Trying not to get mired in theoretical issues, I think the concern is that when we talk about human health, values/ideas extraneous to human health proper could cause people to interpret the evidence base about human health in a distorted way. Examples...
For example, it's obvious that vegans would like both to not eat animal products, but also be healthy. They would like for there to be no tradeoff. Thus, there will be a tendency among some vegans to interpret the human health research as entailing or at least OKing veganism.
Now it might be the case that well-formulated veganism is OK or even excellent from a health POV. Problem is that when trying to interpret whether this is so, some vegans will be biased by wishful thinking, and this will prevent them from objectively assessing the question.

I got a couple of DM's asking me about character development and writing. I have a little time this fine morning. I'll put together a small #writing thread.

So, character development. It's just my approach. YMMV, but here's my path...
Character isn't built in backstory or aesthetic details. Backstory is there to help the writer, but the character development comes form CHOICES and CONSEQUENCES. The more a character makes CHOICES, the more the audience/reader will learn about them.
We understand someone's nature by how the react to things. We assess them based on the choices they make, and those choices, ideally, shouldn't be easy.

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.

What I find truly depressing is that it's not just an endless cycle of terrorism, tragedy, thoughts, prayers, "too soon", move on, continue, forget, repeat next week... more than that being a cycle is its worse thab nothing being done. Gradually people in power make it worse...
...and they're doing it by continuing the above cycle mentioned, and adding to it with loosened restrictions, new loopholes, whipping up gun nuts into a paranoid frenzy, and putting in a damn solid effort to deflect the issue onto something else (mental health for example)...
...while also cutting any chance of doing anything to fix the problem they just redirected to. "It's mental health!" but they cut funding to anything treating mental health. "Schools aren't safe enough!" but they are gutting all funding to schools, no money for security.
