While it's rare for Mercy Corps to comment on U.S. domestic politics, our experience working with children who have lived through trauma leaves us deeply troubled by reports of conditions for migrant children at the border.
It is imperative that providers responsible for the care of detained young migrants provide access to high-quality mental health and psychosocial support services, in addition to following basic principles of decency in how migrants are treated.
These children are likely to have experienced toxic stress for extended periods of time—the staff who are in contact with them must be trained accordingly. Otherwise, these toxic psychological events may affect them for life.

A common retort to inaccessible spaces in the United States is the existence of the ADA: after all, access is enshrined in our law, right? Our schools, restaurants, and public places *can't* be inaccessible, it's illegal. Right?

Nope: a thread about why.
Now, I'm not an expert on this. I encourage further research for folks who want to know more, and if I'm wrong about anything I'm claiming here, please let me know. That being said, how does inaccessibility persist in the United States?
One thing to know about the ADA is that it can not be enforced except by legal action, such as suing. If a space is inaccessible or breaks the laws covered in the ADA, *nothing will happen* unless someone sues. Period.

This thread summaries it based on expert evidence given to the courts.

This is how they set out to steal our democratic process:

1.
Platforms like Twitter and FB give campaigners outlets to communicate w/out worrying about how journalists/editors may change, interpret, or fact-check campaign messages. Removing editors/journalists from the flow of info removes checks on opinions & facts in circulation.

2.
By using social media, the claims of the Leave campaign went unchecked & they circumvented investigations by journalists into whether inpolitical claims were accurate. Instead, the opposition was left to counter erroneous & inaccurate claims. They could say what they wanted.
