One of the things that has been extraordinary is how little coverage there has been of the communities impacted by President Trump's immigration policies and rhetoric here in the US. So few Latinos speaking on TV, on the radio and in newspaper articles.
For example, in this poll: pewhispanic.org/2018/10/25/mor… there are some eye-opening stats.
1. Two-thirds (67%) of Latinos say the administration’s policies have been harmful to Hispanics 2. six-in-ten Hispanics (62%) say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country today 3. (55%) say they are worried that they, a family member could be deported.
Even though Latino unemployment is at historic lows: Only a third rate their situation as excellent or good, down from 40% who said the same in 2015. Possibly why? four-in-ten Hispanics say they have experienced at least one of four offensive incidents in the past year.
The only type of coverage is about how Latinos might be a 'problem' for the Democrats. BTW, the Latino vote is not a monolith and there are many conservative Hispanics. Which is why I had this conversation on my air this morning: npr.org/2018/11/04/664…
But why is it up to a Latino host to highlight a community that feels targeted by pronouncements and policies this election cycle? All the headlines are screaming about immigration. It's insane that America's largest minority is being ignored in this way.
I've covered alot of countries and alot of elections elsewhere. This is my first US election. And I am astonished. Truly.
