If you've ever wondered "uh... what IS a game mechanic, anyway?!" there's now a large encyclopedia of nearly 200 -- at least for tabletop games, minus improvisatory play. Tons of these are found in digital games too, naturally.
Also, each mechanic is illustrated with its own little diagram featuring mod-cute, hex-headed player/characters? These would make a great mega-poster someday. It's expensive but a good reference for any designer who messes around with mechanics. amazon.com/gp/product/B07…
You could describe the bones of many games... in pictograms? Here's one of mine. OK... maybe this is incomprehensible and not entirely accurate (each mechanic has many permutations) but it's kind of cute
