In almost all discussions about remote work I have to first explain the difference between:

- digital backpackers
- workation tourists
- digital staymads
- remote workers

Very different people with very different lifestyles and needs.
B/c i was asked:

Digital Backpackers
- want to see the world
- travel like budget backpackers
- often run a small business
- ... or influencer
- ... or freelance
- switch location every 1-3 weeks
- usually work from coffee shops - ... or bigger coworking spaces
Digital Staymads
- stay 1-6 months
- try to live like local expats
- ... and be more productive
- regularly couples/families
- some work from coffeeshops
- some rent a desk in a coworking space
- ... or smaller office
- ... or use their airbnb
Workation Tourists

- "i dont get enough holidays so i do this"
- ... or "i am the ceo cant let go"
- vacation in hotel or airbnb
- ideally with pool or beach (for pictures)
- work from hotel lobby or airbnb room or pool ;)
Remote Workers
- locals (or expats turned locals)
- work for international companies
- optimize their day routine for own needs
- optimize workplace for efficiency
- some work from home
- some rent desks

A question i was just asked via DM by someone with burnout and i have *no* idea:

How do you find out what interests you?
(looking for career-change)

Follow up questions attached 👇
He is worried about picking his "hobbies" because they act as a "refuge" and he doesn't want them to stop being it (what i understand).

The previous career he just "fell" into and (according to him) never really enjoyed apart of "being good/successful in it".
So TL;DR: Are there frameworks to understand:
- what you are good in?
- what interests you?
- what you enjoy?
- what you should pick as career?

Quick thread because i hear them quite often:

Common concerns about remote work:

Speed of iteration:
This is usually a discussion of async vs sync in disguise. I would recommend having people work in overlapping timezones.
Nuance in communication being lost:
I personally agree on this one. In-person discussion is better for nuanced topics. Try to meet in person for these kind of discussions - eg larger pivots.

I usually frame this as:
Innovation is easier in person, iteration is easier remote.
Trust:
Systemization of trust is a hard task for managers no matter if colocated or not.

Remote work forces you to actively think about processes and output evaluation - instead of using micromanagement as monkey-patch.

- Increase confidence
- Reduce complexity
- Manage expectations

Increase confidence:

Confidence not in the "hell we are amazing" sense.

- Ensure your team can make decisions (know what + why)
- Tooling (CI&CD, linters, complexity scoring, etc)
- Notes, comments, documentation
- People, their life and their careers
- Long term vision
Reduce complexity:

Complexity can be in the literal sense in code but also in an organizational structure.

The less complexity the faster people can work.

Your job is to have a plan in place to reduce it step by step. Abstract/isolate/shield it where you can't remove it.

1/ I had an epiphany that I should broaden my reading and start to read classics and nonfiction in between science fiction books. I started reading Women’s Indian Captivity Narratives the other day, I have read the introduction and first narrative, and so far it is fascinating.
2/ In colonial and early America, Indians used to kidnap white people to use as slaves and hold for ransom. Tens of thousands of whites were kidnapped, and thousands of captivity narratives were published, about and by both male and female captives.
3/ This collection is of captivity narratives by and about women. The introduction states that these captivity narratives were the first American literature to give a voice to women.

Very often in polite liberal circles, there is consternation when it is claimed that Hinduism is the religion of the Vedas

The immediate counter is:

"No! That's a brahminical right wing view. Hinduism is extremely diverse, disorganized motley collection of South Asian faiths"
I contend however that this fashionable view is very inaccurate. In my view much of the theological and philosophical beliefs of the Hindus actually stems from the Vedas.
Also there is a case to be made that Hinduism is actually an extremely well organized belief system with a standardized canon, and a well defined philosophical framework, housing considerable variety within that framework
