History of Busing in Four Chapters. 1. Powerful whites, largely but not exclusively in the South, bus black children to hell and gone to attend far away segregated schools, even if they lived next door to a "white" school, which must be kept pure....
2. Federal courts enforce Brown v. Board of Ed by busing kids to schools outside their segregated neighborhoods. Whites parents squeal that "neighborhood schools" are sacred. Pols ring down the curtain on the entire Constitutionally required project of school desegregation....
3. In the name of "reform," and the newly sacred value of "competition," white parents gladly bus their children to hell and gone to attend oft-segregated "magnet schools," black parents to "charter schools." Neighborhood schools rot, or close....
4. A powerful old man desperately struggles to recall 45 year old arguments about why "busing doesn't work." FIN.
(Footnote 1: SCOTUS rules says segregation only counts within municipalities, not across a region. So segregated white suburbs [segregated largely y state action] get to stay segregated, the disruption falling exclusively on working class urbanites. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milliken_… )
