Watching and reminiscing on Pete Sampras
Amazing how different the greats of today are from him

A Nadal or a Djokovic try to win every point

Sampras never did that
He held serve effortlessly
Played ordinarily in his return games

Lifted himself for one game to win the set 6-4
I think of a Nadal or a Djokovic or even a Federer as "Kshatriyas" of Tennis who fight every point

Pete in contrast was a "Baniya"

Never expended needless effort. Stretched himself for 1 game per set for a single break. No more
When fans today play down Sampras, they never appreciate this "Baniya" side to him

They roll their eyes at the gladiatorial efforts of a Nadal or a Djokovic

Sampras was never interested in being a gladiator. He just wanted to win every set 6-4
The Sampras approach to Tennis has much to teach us

We often tend to "give our best" every hour. Every day. Every week of the year

In the process we burn out

We don't always identify the crucial few hours at work when we need to excel, and operate at 70% rest of the time
