Maarten's point may have been different (more "why do journals make people fill out burdensome forms just to peer review a paper") but this brought up a separate question that periodically burbles up in my mind:
In most research studies that I've worked on (all in USA), race and ethnicity are collected in this way. There's an "ethnicity" question that asks "Hispanic" or "non-Hispanic" and then a "race" question which usually includes some variant of White, Black, Asian, etc...
I'm legitimately just curious: can someone tell me the historical origins of this? It's common in the research studies that I have worked on - nearly every study has an "ethnicity" and "race" question formatted like this - but it seems...I don't know, just weird.

Following up on a recent thread re: alpha-spending and interim analyses, here I’ll dig further into the case that made me curious & a few statements from the study investigators in the aftermath
The scenario posed in that thread tweaked a few of the details, but some may have recognized it as similar to this trial: “Goal-directed perfusion to reduce acute kidney injury: A randomized trial” (link to original paper: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29778331)
The GIFT trial was stopped early (at 50% of target enrollment) with a conclusion that the experimental treatment was effective for prevention of AKI; while the treatment may well be effective, the trial design and execution are an opportunity for learning & discussion

Well, I didn’t know of one, but I was sufficiently interested by Jack’s question that I decided to try my hand at this, so here goes.
Motivation: most papers that I see looking at survival use a time-to-event analysis, but occasionally I do see papers that treat death at a fixed time point as a binary outcome (e.g. “1 year mortality”) & use logistic regression rather than performing a time-to-event analysis
Jack’s recent tweet got me thinking: how often would using logistic regression and binary outcome actually return different results than proper time-to-event analysis?

1. He changed quarterly payment of capitation to HMOs to monthly, making it difficult for HMOs to put billions of enrolles money in fixed deposit accounts (yielding interests).
2. HMOs to provide letters of non-indeptedness (monthly) from healthcare facilities as a precondition for payment of capitation by the NHIS.

3. Delisting of many HMOs for failing to meet up with the rigorous reaccreditation requirements.
4. Big boys own HMOs; Mac-Ferma HMO David Mark, Precious HMO Pius Anyim, Hygeia HMO Eyitayo Lambo, Evon HMO Ndidi Elumelu.... and many more.

5. Forced HMOs to refund to NHIS 1% private insurance regulatory charges that accrued into billions of Naira over the years.
