Have being hearing lots of mastery myths this week (as I do every single week), so here are a few things that are most certainly not anything to do with mastery but are still being passed off as mastery...
Schemes of work stating, for example, what will be presented at pupils in Year 7, term 3, week 5, lesson 2 #notmastery
Unit tests used to label pupils with grades #notmastery
Conveyor belt approach to curriculum, which moves on regardless of whether or not a pupil has gripped an idea #notmastery
Content presented at pupils in order that they can perform in the moment, but taking no account of long term memory #notmastery
Large attainment gap preventing *all* pupils learning at pace #notmastery
Teachers using only one instructional approach to communicate an idea #notmastery
Year groups treated as a whole rather than a large number of individual pupils #notmastery
A timetabled lesson being treated as the unit of learning – as though every mathematical idea takes precisely one hour to learn! #notmastery
Keeping pupils on a single, isolated idea for months on end – killing their love of the subject – and not connecting the idea to the surrounding web of ideas #notmastery
Presenting ideas at pupils that are not targeted at the correct level for their individual development #notmastery
Taking the view there is such a thing as “primary maths” and “secondary maths” #notmastery
