Four conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln were hanged #OnThisDay in 1865: Lewis Powell, David Herold, George Atzerodt and Mary Surratt.

I colorized all of them a few years ago, Booth included.

Thank you for sharing how the colorization of historical photos makes you feel. I am so fully immersed that sometimes it is important for me to remember how powerful this is, and how many people are touched by it. I’m v. grateful for the opportunity to do something so meaningful.
Last year wasn’t easy. While I was getting opportunities that I had only dreamed of, I was definitely feeling the pressure that I put on myself, knowing that people expect so much from me. It’s okay to want to improve, but it’s not okay to let this feeling consume you.
I’m in a much better place now. But wanted to share how much I value this opportunity. I know only a few people that have the chance to work doing something that they love, which makes me feel even more grateful.

Napoleon’s Grande Armée Veterans - In Color

Some of the earliest photographs of veterans are a series of fifteen original sepia views of members of Napoleon’s army taken when these old soldiers were well into their 70’s and 80’s.

These remarkable photographs provide probably the only surviving images of veterans of the Grande Armée and the Guard actually wearing their original uniforms and insignia, although some of the uniforms have obviously been recut by tailors of the 1850s.

#OnThisDay 75 years ago, Operation Bagration begun. Following the most successful deception operation in #WWII which utterly deceived the Germans as to the size and location of the Soviet summer offensive, the Red Army destroyed Army Group Centre.
The giant offensive saw 1.2 million Soviet troops, supported by 4 thousand tanks, 24 thousand artillery pieces, and 5.4 thousand aircraft attack 4 German armies.
Army Group Centre had been stripped of its mobile reserves, as German High Command believed that the Soviet attack would fall in the south. Half a million combatants and 300 thousand non-coms became trapped by the Soviet advance. Largest defeat in the history of the German army.

Operation Forager, was the code name name of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign which included the Battle of Saipan on June 15, 1944. At 0700 8,000 Marines from the 2nd & 4th Marine Divisions launched an amphibious assault on the heavily defended island. #USMC #DDaySaipan75
Dad was with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. Previously on Tarawa he commanded an Infantry platoon and was wounded by a sniper towards the end of the battle but managed to walk away. On Saipan he was on Battalion Staff as the S2 Officer and was not as lucky...

154 years ago tonight our 16th President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theater while watching the play Our American Cousin.

After spending four long years overseeing a civil war that witnessed over 500,000 dead, the war was finally over. Lincoln was looking forward to a night of relaxation at the theater.

Ford's theater had only opened two years earlier in 1863. One of the well known actors who appeared in Shakespearean plays: John Wilkes Booth, future assassin of our President.

Today In History 1865: Abraham Lincoln is shot by John Wilkes Booth inside Ford’s theater in Washington DC during the play “Our American Cousin”. Read below and I’ll run through some facts- I’m going to have to thread this
The Lincolns originally were to attend the play at Grover’s theater to see “The Wonderful Lamp” (Aladdin) but Mrs. Lincoln desperately wanted to see the legendary actress Laura Keene perform “Our American Cousin” so a last minute change was made to go to Ford’s theater
The Lincolns were supposed to be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, but Mrs. Grant couldn’t stand Mrs. Lincoln and they left town. Booth had intentions on killing Grant, as well. Their fill-in guests were Henry Rathbone and his fiancee, Clara Harris
