I stand ready to consult on how Picard, with all his vast experience in things going wrong, has prepared his dog for mishap.
Along with wilderness first aid all Star Trek officers go through, Picard (& Data) must've done specialized pet first aid.

What do you do when your furry companion chokes on kibble? (How do you give a hedgehog the Heimlich?) When do you intervene vs when do you monitor? Skillz!
Sure, a replicator can provide anything you need at a moment's notice, but Picard knows tech fails better than most.

He's got a kit of the core essentials just in case: Food, water, dishes, a comforting toy, a smelly blanket, enclosure, first aid supplies, & a photo together.
(That pet-owner photo is my fav bit of pet emergency preparedness. It's easy & fun yet super-important, and most pet owners can do it in seconds. Overcoming inertia to start preparedness is always hardest, so an easy first step is key!)

After years of responsibility for a star ship, Picard knows that practice is important to build muscle memory reflexes and to expose gaps in plans. He's clearly trained his pup well with a set of emergency commands.

Y'know, the space version of this:
Bust most importantly, Picard knows that tighter bonds mean more resiliency.

Extensive petting, long walks, rowdy games, and all the cuddles are building trust and goodwill between person & pup, creating a solid relationship that will see them through rough times. It's key prep.
I haven't consulted on Star Trek: Picard, which is why I can muse so openly*, but I am Here For This. Or for geology of his vineyards. Or or or...

But if not, I'll pitch science-based episode reviews. ;)

(*my Star Trek: Discovery NDA is a work of art even after airing.)
